COVID 19 Response from IMAGE Next Project

The first case of the COVID-19 pandemic in the Indian state of Karnataka was confirmed on 9 March 2020. Two days later, the state became the first in India to invoke the provisions of the Epidemic Diseases Act, 1897, which are set to last for a year, to curb the spread of the disease. Workers in the informal sector, particularly street vendors, construction workers, healthcare and gig economy workers are the most adversely impacted sections following the restrictions imposed to fight coronavirus.

Chikkaballapura and Kolar districts are affected by this Pandemic. To address this COVID 19 Crisis, Arpanam Trust, supported by Comic Relief and Terre des Hommes-Netherlands, improves the lives and livelihoods of people from vulnerable and marginalised sections of society in Chikkaballapura and Kolar districts of Karnataka.

1. From IMAGE Next project, during this lockdown period, Arpanam Trust has reached 125  villages of 2 blocks in 2 districts and supported dry rations like Cereals, pulses, oil, sugar etc for emergency relief and Hygiene Kits like Masks, Sanitizers and Hand wash soaps for protection and hygiene. The team has distributed the relief items to 1100 vulnerable and marginalised families who are the victims and survivors of Early Child Marriages.
2. It has rolled out these relief measures from 26th May to 30th May 2020 by the field team members with the support of local leaders, PRI Members, grass-root levels government workers like ASHAs and AWWs.
3. It has engaged the EMGs and Survivors by conducting the Rangoli and Posters competition on COVID 19.
4. In addition to these, the team is continuously putting its efforts for prevention and protection measures through awareness on COVID 19 by distributing IEC materials in the local languages. The field team members are in continuous touch with the Early Married Girls (EMGs) and Survivors through personal visits as well as through mobile conversions.
5. Arapanam is putting its utmost efforts to empower the field staff by conducting various meetings on Concall through the IMAGE project and also planning to build the capacity of movement leaders through online training.

OUR RESPONSE TO COVID 19

Initiatives for Married Adolescent Girls’ Empowerment (IMAGE) is an innovative and integrated initiative to address the issues of Early Married Girls (EMGs) in Karnataka state of India. Funded by Terre des Hommes-Netherlands (TdH-NL), the project is being implemented by the consortium in 5 selected districts of Bagalkot, Belgaum, Bidar, Chamrajnagara and Chikkaballapur.

Chikkaballapura district is one of the worst-hit districts in Karnataka by this COVID 19 pandemic. Because of this pandemic, Workers in the informal sector, particularly street vendors, construction workers, healthcare and gig economy workers are the most adversely impacted sections following the restrictions imposed to fight coronavirus.

In response to the COVID 19 crisis, ARPANAM Trust has taken various steps for the humanitarian response.

1. The Vidyanikethan Bidar team distributed dry rations like Cereals, pulses, oil, sugar etc for emergency relief to 400 vulnerable and marginalised families from 47 villages who are victims and survivors of Early Child Marriages.
2. It has provided Hygiene Kits like Masks, Sanitizers and Hand wash soaps for protection and hygiene to 400 Vulnerable families.
3. It has conducted various meetings through Concall to build the capacity of field team members for protection and prevention measures on COVID 19.
4. It has distributed IEC Materials on COVID 19 to make aware the Early Married Girls (EMGs), Survivors, Families and communities.
5. It has engaged the EMGs and Survivors by conducting the Rangoli and Posters competition on COVID 19.

Now it is planning to build the capacity of EMGs and staff by online training through Zoom meeting App.

It has rolled out these relief measures from 25th May to 30th May 2020  by the field team members with the support of local leaders, PRI Members, grass-root level government workers like ASHAs and AWWs and local CSOs.
